Acknowledgment

This is the most common notarial act performed by a notary public. The notary public certifies: That the signer personally appeared before the notary public on the date and in the county indicated; The identity of the signer is confirmed; and that the signer acknowledged executing (signing) the document.

Jurat

This is second most common notarial act performed by a notary public. In the jurat, the notary public certifies: That the signer personally appeared before the notary public on the date and in the county indicated; That the signer signed the document in the presence of the notary public; That the notary public administered the oath or affirmation; and that the identity of the signer confirmed.

Certified Copies

A notary public may only certify copies of powers of attorney under Probate Code section 4307 and his or her own notary public journal. Certified copies of birth, fetal death, death, and marriage records may be made only by the State Registrar and by county recorders.

Power of Attorney

We supply free, easy to complete Power of Attorney forms. Simply fill in your name and the name of the person who will be your agent (attorney-in-fact) as well as a detailed description of what you need him/her to do for you as your agent. We are not lawyers and cannot give legal advice.

Apostille

If you’ll be sending your notarized document out of the country you may need an Apostille. An Apostille is a certificate issued by the Secretary of State that proves the authenticity of a Notary’s signature and seal.

Authentication

Most county recorders and other authorities will accept a properly notarized document from an out-of-state Notary with no questions. On occasion, the receiving agency may require proof that the notarial signature and seal are genuine. This proof is called “authentication” or “legalization.”

Copy Certification by Document Custodian

In states where Notaries are prohibited from certifying copies of documents, there is an alternative procedure called a copy certification by document custodian. This procedure allows a person in permanent possession of an original document to sign a written declaration that a copy of it is identical to the original, and take an oath or affirmation before the Notary.

Plan Subdivision Map

Because seal inks smear on plastic-surfaced maps, acknowledgment certificates printed on such maps need not bear the Notary’s seal if the Notary’s name, county of principal place of business and commission expiration date printed below Notary’s signature.

Wills and Trusts

A last will and testament is a complex and sensitive legal document that can take different forms, depending on state law. Some wills legally require notarization, some do not and may actually be invalidated if they are notarized, and some allow notarization as one of several witnessing options.   • Foreign Passport stamped by USCIS.
  • Driver’s License or ID issued by another state. 
  • Driver’s License from Canada or Mexico.
  • Employee ID issued by State of California, or any city or county within the state – must contain photograph, description and signature.
  • ID cards issued by USCIS can only be used to notarize immigration / USCIS forms.
